5d Mark iv

If you are thinking of purchasing your new professional camera, you will have realized how many considerations to make and how many aspects to consider.

TEST CANON 5d MARK IV

The market offers many models of professional cameras, able to satisfy every type of need. From the simple amateur to the professional, over time the great producers have always managed to offer attractive novelties, models capable of revolutionizing photography with their innovative features.

Among the iconic houses there is without a doubt the Canon, which has been offering professional SLRs for some time and which represents a point of reference in the sector. His Canon 5d Mark IV is the fourth generation of a model that has marked the history of professional SLR cameras. To get to know each detail better, the most important features, the price and its strengths and weaknesses, it is necessary to go for a thorough analysis: only in this way can you know if it is truly the professional camera for you.

Canon 5d Mark IV, le caratteristiche tecniche

Among Canon’s full frame models, the Canon EOS 5D series is one of the most recognizable camera lines of the digital age. The 5D Mark IV model is designed to attract a wide range of enthusiasts and professionals. Since its appearance on the market, it has proven to be one of the best Canon cameras and one of the best full frame digital SLR cameras. Almost identical to the previous model, the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV has among its strengths a high resolution sensor with Dual Pixel autofocus, 4K video capture, an updated AF system, a touchscreen, a better watertight seal, Integrated Wi-Fi / NFC, an intervalometer and GPS.

The Canon 5D Mark IV was born from this analysis and in-depth study, here are the key specifications of this model:

  • New 30.4MP CMOS full frame sensor with Dual Pixel AF
  • DCI 4K 30 / 24p video using Motion JPEG + 4K Frame Grab
  • 61-point AF system with 41 cross sensors (-3 EV sensitive center point)
  • Dual Pixel AF (sensitive to -4EV) for AF
  • ISO 100-32000 (expandable to 102400)
  • Continuous shooting at 7 fps
  • Dual Pixel Raw (image micro adjustment, bokeh shift, ghosting reduction)
  • 50,000 pixel RGB + IR measurement sensor
  • 1.6 “M-dot 3.2” full-time touchscreen
  • Wi-Fi with NFC + GPS
  • Integrated bulb timer interval timer
  • Better waterproofness
  • The 5D Mark IV is Canon’s first full frame capable of continuously focusing in Live View while capturing photos. Thanks to Dual Pixel AF, the focus is generally very accurate even with fast lenses.
  • The 5D Mark IV can also count on Dual Pixel Raw, an elegant option that proves useful in specific shooting scenarios: based on the Dual Pixel CMOS AF sensor, this innovative image format contains more information than traditional RAW. The machine can thus take advantage of the photodiodes of each of its 30.4 megapixels as well as for focusing also to generate a RAW file containing two photos inside. In this way it will be possible to correct any auto-focus imperfections. I personally use this feature only for still-lifw photography.

The Canon 5D Mark IV has external microphone and headphone ports, as well as HDMI Mini out and USB 3.0 terminals. In addition, it is equipped with dual CompactFlash (which accepts fast UDMA 7 cards) and SD card slot, and has Wi-Fi and NFC connectivity for transferring images to a compatible device.

Canon 5d Mark IV, use and management

The EOS 5D Mark IV model has a very satisfactory grip and a weight of 60 g less than the previous Mark III but, at the same time, has improved the waterproofing with rubber pads and extra seals. The camera has a customizable button just below the joypad, on the back of the body, which can be used to perform a multitude of functions together with the front command dial.

The AF is connected to the measurement system of the 5D Mark IV, with the latter helping to detect and trace colored objects and perform facial recognition. Coverage is good and better than the 5D Mark III, but there is still significant distortion towards the center of the frame.

As you’d expect from a full-frame SLR, the camera has a large, bright viewfinder with 100% coverage. In addition to displaying the key shutter information at the bottom, it also benefits from what Canon calls “Intelligent Viewfinder II technology”. The rear display has an impressive resolution and allows you to have one of the most powerful screens on the market. I would have liked it if the screen had been tilted, which would have been very useful for vide

Canon EOS 5d Mark IV, the weak points

The Canon EOS 5D Mark IV is today one of the most interesting professional reflections that the market offers. A clear and indisputable improvement compared to the previous model but its debut on the market is dated August 2016 and, after four years, it risks becoming obsolete.

Each feature is excellent: the sensor, the noise, the dynamic range, the DCI 4K video capture, the handling and ergonomics, its level does not exceed other models currently on the market, which have expanded the bar compared to the characteristics of a few years ago.

Among the problems there is also a 1.64x fragment of the sensor too heavy to make wide angle shots. Although effective as a professional camera, the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV remains very good by today’s standards but lags slightly behind in continuous shooting performance. Finally, the presence of double slots for CF / SD cards is the set of how the market has evolved (just think of the increasingly reduced use of CF cards).

Canon EOS 5d Mark IV, THE PRICE

Currently the price of the Canon Eos 5D Mark IV is around 2000 euros for the body only (but on the web you can also find offers for around 1740 euros). Over the years the price has dropped dramatically: initially the cost was around 3200 euros for the basic model to reach over 4000 euros for a model with 24-105mm F4L IS II USM lens. After four years, its price has therefore almost halved, making the Canon EOS 5d Mark IV one of the best Canon professional SLR cameras on the market.
